Cecil In Memoriam

TLC Dental Group Syracuse NY Cecil the Lion

At TLC Dental Group we mourn the wanton killing of the beloved African lion Cecil by a Minnesota dentist. We mourn the loss of yet another member of his vanishing species for the lion holds a special place in the hearts of Central New Yorkers.

The Cowardly Lion was conceived by the creative mind of L. Frank Baum and is annually celebrated in his birthplace of Chittenango And for more than a quarter of a century the Cowardly Lion (in classic Hollywood costume) has held a place of honor on the TLC Dental Group staff. He is duly profiled on the staff page of our website http://www.tlcdentalsyr.com/staff/ along with his friends The Tooth Fairy and The Mighty Molar with whom he greets present and future patients at special events.

The Cowardly Lion inspired our longstanding mantra, “We Cater to Dental Cowards” and is evoked when Dr. Rothenberg invites children to open their mouths “wide like a lion.” He looms fittingly large at our Zoo Boo events where he once visited Joshua, the lion of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, that we “adopted” and financially supported.

We therefore have a long and enduring affection for lions and a deep respect for their place in the animal kingdom and in nature as a whole. It is not just lions that are vanishing from our planet but also thousands of species of flora and fauna. We hope that the senseless killing of Cecil to decorate the wall of a dentist will encourage us to protect and preserve these majestic creatures and all endangered species.
